Chiropractic is a natural and non-invasive form of health care that is based on the principle that the body has the inherent ability to heal without the use of drugs or surgery. This fundamental approach to wellness mirrors a new and changing attitude toward health care.
An individual’s health is either directly or indirectly controlled by the nervous system and interference within the nerve system, due to trauma or biomechanical instability, impairs normal function and lowers resistance to disease. When physical, chemical and emotional stresses exceed our ability to adapt, that stress becomes stored in our Neurospinal system and vital information between brain and body becomes interfered with, and our innate intelligence is not allowed to communicate to its highest potential. Through chiropractic adjustments, nervous system interference due to abnormalities in the musculoskeletal relationships of the vertebrae (called subluxations) can be corrected. This allows the nervous system to function properly, enabling the body to heal through its own natural recuperative powers. Chiropractors are highly skilled in the art of adjusting all the joints of the body. Adjustments are gentle and specific physical maneuvers that can be applied safely to people of any age. Before acceptance to a five-year chiropractic college, prospective chiropractors must complete a minimum of three years of undergraduate work with a heavy emphasis on the basic sciences.
Chiropractic professional education in the United States provides the doctoral candidate with a core of knowledge in the basic sciences, clinical sciences, and related health subjects in order to achieve full competence in the workings of the human body. This allows the doctor of chiropractic to perform the professional obligations of a primary care clinician. Since chiropractors don’t prescribe drugs, instead of studying pharmacology and surgery, they receive an even deeper training in anatomy, physiology, rehabilitation, nutrition, diagnosis, X-ray and a variety of adjusting techniques that aren’t taught in any other health care field. As a primary care clinician, responsibilities include wellness promotion, health assessment, diagnosis, and chiropractic management of the patient’s health care needs. When indicated, the doctor of chiropractic consults with, co-manages, or refers to other health care providers.
